Group and Ring Theoretic Properties of Polycyclic Groups

Group and Ring Theoretic Properties of Polycyclic Groups

Polycyclic groups are built from cyclic groups in a specific way. They arise in many contexts within group theory itself but also more generally in algebra, for example in the theory of Noetherian rings. The first half of this book develops the standard group theoretic techniques for studying polycyclic groups and the basic properties of these groups. The second half then focuses specifically on the ring theoretic properties of polycyclic groups and their applications, often to purely group theoretic situations. The book is intended to be a study manual for graduate students and researchers coming into contact with polycyclic groups, where the main lines of the subject can be learned from scratch. Thus it has been kept short and readable with a view that it can be read and worked through from cover to cover. At the end of each topic covered there is a description without proofs, but with full references, of further developments in the area. An extensive bibliography then concludes the book.

Don't Tell Me I'm Going to Die

These reflections on my terminal cancer have only one purpose in mind: to bring together those who would heal. and those who would be healed. And to preserve protect and prolong life, hold it sacred against all impediments and anyone who would have it otherwise. They mirror the human predicament reflected in a single heart, are written with no intent to harm, and hold everybody harmless in an effort to save lives. Some of the names have been altered to protect the innocent, while others have been used with their permission. Everything written and implied explicitly. or implicitly, is solely the perception of the author. The story of my life struggling with the cancer in me and the cancer out...

Gravitation as a Plastic Distortion of the Lorentz Vacuum

Addressing graduate students and researchers in theoretical physics and mathematics, this book presents a new formulation of the theory of gravity. In the new approach the gravitational field has the same ontology as the electromagnetic, strong, and weak fields. In other words it is a physical field living in Minkowski spacetime. Some necessary new mathematical concepts are introduced and carefully explained. Then they are used to describe the deformation of geometries, the key to describing the gravitational field as a plastic deformation of the Lorentz vacuum. It emerges after further analysis that the theory provides trustworthy energy-momentum and angular momentum conservation laws, a feature that is normally lacking in General Relativity.

A History of Inverse Probability

This is a history of the use of Bayes theoremfrom its discovery by Thomas Bayes to the rise of the statistical competitors in the first part of the twentieth century. The book focuses particularly on the development of one of the fundamental aspects of Bayesian statistics, and in this new edition readers will find new sections on contributors to the theory. In addition, this edition includes amplified discussion of relevant work.

An excellent reference for anyone needing to examine properties of harmonic vector fields to help them solve research problems. The book provides the main results of harmonic vector fields with an emphasis on Riemannian manifolds using past and existing problems to assist you in analyzing and furnishing your own conclusion for further research. It emphasizes a combination of theoretical development with practical applications for a solid treatment of the subject useful to those new to research using differential geometric methods in extensive detail. A useful tool for any scientist conducting research in the field of harmonic analysis Provides applications and modern techniques to problem solving A clear and concise exposition of differential geometry of harmonic vector fields on Reimannian manifolds Physical Applications of Geometric Methods

Nonlinear Second Order Elliptic Equations Involving Measures

In the last 40 years semi-linear elliptic equations became a central subject of study in the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. On the one hand, the interest in this area is of a theoretical nature, due to its deep relations to other branches of mathematics, especially linear and nonlinear harmonic analysis, dynamical systems, differential geometry and probability. On the other hand, this study is of interest because of its applications. Equations of this type come up in various areas such as problems of physics and astrophysics, curvature problems in Riemannian geometry, logistic problems related for instance to population models and, most importantly, the study of branchin...

Meet Darla. She wants to tell you a little about herself. She goes to elementary school with some fantastic friends and teachers. They know a lot about her. Darla has many things in common with other girls her age, but with one big difference: she has High-Functioning Autism. Read as she describes what that is like for her. She wants you to know how you can be a help to her. She also just wants to be your friend!

Material Inhomogeneities and their Evolution

With its origins in the theories of continuous distributions of dislocations and ofmetalplasticity, inhomogeneitytheoryisarichandvibrant?eldofresearch. The recognition of the important role played by con?gurational or material forces in phenomena such as growth and remodelling is perhaps its greatest present-day impetus. While some excellent comprehensive works approa- ing the subject from di?erent angles have been published, the objective of this monograph is to present a point of view that emphasizes the di?erenti- geometric aspects of inhomogeneity theory. In so doing, we follow the general lines of thought that we have propounded in many publications and presen- tions over the last two de...
